Hansel & Gretel Pop Up Novel
Use of Colour
The book I decided to analysis was the Hansel & Gretel Pop Up Novel. The use of colour is great within the novel. The artist uses a variety of autumn/earth colours which fits within the feel of the story, for example being set in a woods relates to the earthy colour scheme. The most used colours in the Hansel and Gretel novel are greens and browns which refers to nature and wildlife environment. This novel however does include several pops of colour, for example the moon in one of the novels pages has a crisp pearl white colour which makes it stand out from the page. The colours I personally feel are effective within this novel as it makes the overall book look very engaging and interesting; you straight away want to look through this novel as its exciting and something new.
Use of Imagery
This novel is excellent for its use of imagery. Each page has a different pop of illustration which makes the book extremely unique, as this traditional tale is usually seen through normal novels or film. I have never seen the tale be portrayed through pop up graphics which makes it exciting to read. The use of imagery is really good; the actual illustrations have been hand drawn and to a highly professional standard, furthermore portraying the tale very well. The pop up affect of the novel makes the imagery looks 3D which is different and intriguing. What I find good about this novel is the unexceptional aspect of it, when you first look at the book you don't expect it to be a pop up book this makes it very interesting. Overall I found the imagery in this novel to be really good, I liked how detailed the drawings were and the use of the 3D pop up affect.
Use of Text
The use of text in this novel is also very good. On the front page of the novel the text is an old fashioned style font which relates to the tale being a traditional classic. The text is easy to read and clearly positioned throughout the pages which is good as the main focus is the imagery. The text is the same within the novel which I feel is good as it makes the novel look more professional and slick. The colour of the text is black which makes it easy to read, especially from a distance. The text on every page is placed on a white background, which I feel was did to firstly make it look clearer in the book as the animations are extremely engaging and the main focus. I also feel the text was placed like this to give the impression of a traditional fairytale style book, with the use of an old fashioned style font and placed on a white background.
Jack and Jill Storyboard
In today's lesson we created a graphic version of the child story of "Jack and Jill". We started by creating our own version of the story through cutting and sticking different pictures which don't usually relate to the original story onto a six box storyboard which underneath the boxes tells the story of the animation.
This is my improved version of my Jack & Jack illustration. I used Photoshop to add colour to my original storyboard. I started with scanning the illustration storyboard onto the computer and then opened the image in Photoshop. I used the wand tool as well as the paint tool to create different colours to the storyboard.
Overall I'm pleased with my the changes I made to my Jack and Jill storyboard, I feel the use of colour makes the actual illustrations stand out and look more significant. I only wanted to transform the colour of the background as I liked having the cartoons being in black and white, as I feel it related to the style of old fashioned comic strips (which is the style I was going). I liked the use of different colours as it made them look more quirky and a modern touch to an old school style of illustrations.
I Love Dust
I love Dust is a multi-disciplinary studio founded back in 2003. Based on the South coast of England, surrounded by the rolling English countryside and whipped by sea air. 'I love Dust' Artwork
These are all artworks I found on the website which I liked and gained inspiration.
http://ilovedust.com/work/charles-dickens
I Love Dust Quote
'We work digitally a lot. Even if we hand draw we tend to have the need to make it a vector or a big fat chunky .psd, so maybe 75% digital 25% hand drawn. The line gets blurry the more you mix them'
Use Of Colour
The use of colour in I Love Dust varies from a range of bright colours to bold black and white illustrations. Most of the artwork is extremely bold and defined with the effect of 3D. The colour palette is strong and varied using a variety of bright neon colours like pinks, yellows and blues. They also use black and white in there animations which I think makes them look bold and defined more then colour animations. I think the colours are successful as the artwork either way in black and white or in mixed colours looks very strong and with the effect of 3D. In this piece of artwork the colour which is used is just black and white, I feel that makes the piece look more sharp and strong. The bold black against the white creates a great contrast and the 3D effect.
Use Of Text
I Love Dust uses a lot of typeface in there artwork which I like as it makes the artwork look more creative and digital. They use a lot of 3D scales in there artwork which gives it a more modern effect. In this piece of work there is three different types of text which creates an interesting look. the 'I wear all these rings so i can' is in the style of hand drawing as well as the 'fight off the beasts', I like these types of text as it looks creative and exciting. This piece of work reflects the theme well as its a strong an powerful piece of typography.
Use Of Imagery
There is only one piece of imagery in the artwork which is the hand in the centre. It reflects the theme well as it continues with strong and powerful look of the artwork. The imagery is realistic as its drawn by hand and then digitally enhanced through computer technology. I think they used the right amount of imagery as I feel if they used any more imagery it would over power the piece of work and make it less professional.
Hierarchy Of Information
What you see first when looking at this artwork is the hand in the middle of the page. It grabs your attention straight away as its very bold and defined. The order in which you read the typeface is from the top to the bottom as the two sentences are meant to be one sentence which is why your eyes are drawn to that section first.
Tools and Techniques Used
I think a variety of tools and techniques were used in this piece of art as the hand looks hand drawn as well does the word 'Karl' at the bottom of the page. I also think a variety computer based techniques were used as it has a digital effect. I think Photoshop and Illustrator were definitely used.
What is most successful about the image?
What I think is most successful about the image is the use of typography and imagery as I feel the use of the two creates an exciting and interesting look. The image is also very bold, which stands out from the page. If I was going to alter this to make it more successful I would of used a splash of colour like gold or red to make it more defined and strong.
Statement of Intent
What Song lyrics have you selected? Why?
The song lyrics I have chosen are from Fleetwood Mac's 1979 album Tusk called Sisters Of The Moon. I decided to use these lyrics as I feel they are very imaginative and visionary which will allow me to hopefully create a visually exciting piece of work. Furthermore I actually really like the song and I am familiar with the artist as well as my chosen song. Some of the lyrics from Sisters Of The Moon which I thought would be good to turn into imagery are as follows; 'her black robes trailing
sister of the moon, and a black widow spider makes more sound than she'. I thought these several lines were really interesting and gave a clear and understandable story, as well as the use of phrases like 'her black robes trailing' sounds striking and vivid.
Lyrics:
Intense silence
As she walked in the room
Her black robes trailing
Sister of the moon
And a black widow spider makes
More sound than she
And black moons in those eyes of hers
Made more sense to me
What format will your Graphic Narrative take? (Comic, children book, illustration etc…)
I would like my graphic narrative to have the format of a book style illustration. I will tell the story of the song lyrics through three different illustrations which all have a significant meaning to the words, for example to represent the 'sister of the moon' one of the illustrations will be of a women with a moon. I will create the three illustrations into a timeline style like a three paged book, with the typography of the lyrics around the illustrations.
How will you change your script to make it more modern, historical or futuristic twist to your script, illustrating a mood/style or intended target audience?
I will change my script to make it more modern by using illustrations which are fresh, unique and interesting and further more attract my target audience. As the song I have chosen was created in the 70's I want to add a modern twist to it through my illustrations by editing it with bright colours, interesting patterns and using contemporary typography to make the graphic narrative look young and renewed.
What designers or illustrators do you feel will influence and inspire the style you are working toward and why?
The illustrators which I feel will influence my artwork is graphical design company 'I Love Dust'. I believe this as I Love Dust tends to use a mixture of typography and imagery which I would like to do in my graphic narrative. I also will gain influence from I Love Dust as with there illustrations they use a lot of detail which I also would like to do in my artwork. Furthermore I Love Dust creates illustrations through drawings which is how I am going to create my own illustrations; through the process of drawing and then scanning them onto the computer.
Which techniques and materials do you hope to use? List and include source i.e. collage, photographic, typography, drawings, diagrams etc…
The techniques and materials which I hope to use throughout this assignment are as follows. I will draw the majority of illustrations by hand and then scan them onto the computer, which I will furthermore edit through Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I will also use typography for the lyrics which I will place around the illustrations.
Chosen Lyrics
"Sisters Of The Moon" By Fleetwood Mac
Intense silence
As she walked in the room
Her black robes trailing
Sister of the moon
And a black widow spider makes
More sound than she
And black moons in those eyes of hers
Made more sense to me
Heavy persuasion
It was hard to breathe
She was dark at the top of the stairs
And she called to me
And so I followed
As friends often do
I cared not for love, nor money
I think she knew
The people, they love her
And still they are the most cruel
She asked me
Be my sister, sister of the moon
Some call her sister of the moon
Some say illusions are her game
Wrap her in velvet
Does anyone, ah, know her name
So we make our choices
When there is no choice
And we listen to their voices
Ignoring our own voice
The section of the lyrics I will be using is the following:
Intense silence
As she walked in the room
Her black robes trailing
Sister of the moon
And a black widow spider makes
More sound than she
And black moons in those eyes of hers
Made more sense to me
I really like these lyrics as I feel they are very imaginative and interesting and you straight away create a story in your mind about the black widow like sister of the moon. Fleetwood Mac are famous for creating strong and visionary lyrics which as well as tell a story creates an amazingly vivid visual.
Storyboard Design
This is my storyboard design of the chosen lyrics 'Sisters Of The Moon by Fleetwood Mac'. I used the first few lines of the song to graphically create my own interpretation. I decided to create three individual drawings which all summarise each line of the song. My first drawing will be of a women to show the relation to 'sister of the moon' and also relate it to the moon with having the moon in the background. My second drawing will be of a spider to relate to the lyrics 'and a black widow spider makes more sound than she'. Finally my third drawing will be of a close up shot of a females face to relate to the lyrics 'and black moons in those eyes of hers made more sense to me'.
Creating My Illustration
I started the process of creating my illustration through creating drawings by finding images which I felt related to my song lyrics, for example I found a drawing of a women behind a moon. I was really pleased with this finding as it completely related to the song lyrics 'sister of the moon', I felt I could use this image and manipulate it to further relate to the song, by making the women in the drawing have a similar style to Stevie Nicks in Fleetwood Mac by adding a similar style to hers like clothing and piercings.
This is the original image of the women and the moon which I found on the Internet.
Another section of the lyrics were the following 'and a black widow spider makes more sound than she'. For these lyrics I used an illustration which I found from the Internet. The illustration I found was actually of a black widow which I felt made it relate to the song lyrics more. With the illustration of the women and spider I printed them both off the internet and traced them using the light box to make both the traces more precise and detailed. I like using the light boxes as I feel it creates a better trace as the light is a great source for getting precise detail and a clear view.
This is the original image of the black widow spider illustration.
I decided to create three illustrations for my graphic narrative as I feel three illustrations clearly define my chosen song lyrics. The illustration which I have chosen to relate to the lyrics 'and black moons in those eyes of hers, made more sense to me' is of a image a found of image of a close up illustration of a girl. What I wanted to do with this image is what I did with my other two which is print of the images and use the light box to trace over them. However with this image I want to change it through editing as the lyrics say 'black moons in those eyes of hers' with these lyrics I will change the eyes of the drawing by not adding any eye detail just the shape as I want to transform it into a moon, by adding details of a moon in the eye.
This is the original image of the close up women drawing.
My Illustration Drawings Scanned
Digitally Creating My Illustration
After I traced all of my illustrations with the help of the light boxes I used the scanner to scan my drawings onto the computer and then create my graphic narrative through Adobe Illustrator.
Change
I decided I wanted to redo my first drawing of the 'women and the moon' as I felt I could improve it further if I had the opportunity to redo the first drawing. I also wanted to make several changes to make it relate to my lyrics further by adding simple touches and details. I also wanted my second attempt of the drawing to have more similarities to the female lead singer of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks. I will continue to my changes when I add my drawings to illustrator through scanning them onto the computer.
This is my improved drawing of the 'women and the moon':
Improving The Drawings
After I scanned my images onto the Computer I had second thoughts and decided to photocopy the original drawings on the photocopier which created a sharper and more defined outline of the drawings. The photocopied versions are a lot more improved then the originals as a lot more detail is shown and it also looks even more realistic.
Improved Drawings
Creating my Graphic Narrative through Illustrator
I started the creation of my graphic narrative on Adobe Photoshop after I scanned all of my drawings onto the computer.
These are all screen grabs from the processes I first started when creating my graphic narrative. I used multiple different tools such as the following; levels, brightness/contrast, threshold and crop which all individually improved my drawings and allowed me to continue with the process of creating the artwork. I found all these different tools really helpful as it obviously improved the original drawing designs but also allowed me to experiment with Photoshop and play around with different tools in till I found the best improvements.
These are several screen grabs of the drawings with the use of the crop tool which I felt improved the drawings as it made them more defined and the main focus. With the extra white background I felt it drew away from the attention of the drawings. Also some of the background had several imperfections around it which I felt made it slightly unprofessional. So I find the use of cropping was success as it definitely improved it and made it more polished.
These are a few more screen grabs from Photoshop which show different tools I have used on my drawings. These screen grabs show the following adjustments; levels, brightness/contrast and threshold. I'm pleased with the adjustments I have made as I feel overall they have extremely improved my overall drawings. I like how adjusting the levels has made the details on the drawings more defined and crisp.
I continued my graphic narrative creating through finding images from Google which I wanted to use as the backgrounds of my scanned drawings. The style I wanted to go for was the hippy/70's era with influences from Fleetwood Mac. These are the images which I decided to use as my backgrounds.
I liked this image as I felt with the ocean and moon it made reference to the lyrics which include the word 'moon'. I decided to use this image for the background of the 'women and the moon' as I really liked the overall image and the relation between the sister of the moon and the moon and the ocean.
I decided to use this image for the close up drawing of the women's face as I really like this image as it represents the songs band, being Fleetwood Mac. I plan to blur the image so the close up drawing is the main priority.
This screen grabs shows me creating the blurred effect to my image. I created this effect in Adobe Photoshop through following steps. I started by adding a new layer then clicking onto the choose filter section in the edit bar then the 'blur' button and lens blur. I adjusted the blur to how I thought it would look the best.
These are all screen grabs of all some of the steps I did to create my graphic narrative. I created my artwork mostly through Adobe Photoshop but also used Illustrator for improving my scanned drawings. In this screen grab it shows me creating the first page of my graphic narrative, I added layers to the original photo to make it more advanced. I blurred the original image using the blurred tool. I changed some of the colours of my drawings like the lips on the close up drawing from white to red.
This screen grab shows the process of me blurring my background images. I decided to do this as I wanted my drawings to be the main focus so I thought the blurred effect would achieve that. I blurred my background images through Photoshop by adding a new layer then clicking onto the choose filter section in the edit bar then the 'blur' button and lens blur.
This is a screen grab of the font I've decided to use for my graphic narrative. Its called 'riesling' and from font creator 'dafont'.
This a screen grab of my graphic narrative which shows me making improvement to my final piece. After I added the song lyrics to the work with the use of the font I found from 'dafont' I added another layer to the font and placed it underneath it slightly to make it look faded and unnoticeable. I also changed the opacity of the colour of the lyrics to 20%.
Graphical Narrative Synopsis
As a part of this assignment I was separately assigned to create the synopsis for the graphical narrative novel, which will be a book of all the pieces of artwork from both Level 3 Multi-Media Journalism classes.
Synopsis
A collection of graphical narratives inspired by renowned
and acclaimed musical icons; including The Beatles, Lana Del Rey, Sia and
Fleetwood Mac.
The shortest definition of graphic novels describes them as
“book-length comic books”. A definition used by librarians refers to them as
book-length narratives told using a combination of words and sequential art,
often presented in comic book style.
This published novel has been created by students (17 to 19
year olds) who are currently studying BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Media
(Print & Publishing Year 2) at South Downs College in Hampshire.
In the future many of the students are planning to fulfil
careers within the Media Sector, varying from ventures in Journalism, Graphic
Design, Photography, Radio and Advertising.
The creations demonstrated in the edition were a part of a
graphical project and students have used a variety of different techniques.
This includes: Photography, Illustrator, Typography, Photoshop, Model Building
and Illustrations.

Use of Colour
This is 1/3 of my Graphic Narrative. I decided to evaluate this piece of art when regarding the use of colour as I feel this is my strongest graphic narrative with the use of colour. I decided I wanted my artwork to look bright and vibrant with a feel of 70's summer. I used Google to find my background image after I searched things like 'fleetwood mac' and 'hippy 70's' I finally found this image which is of Fleetwood Mac in the late 70's. I really like this image as the I thought it represented the hippy summery vibe of the 70's as Fleetwood Mac were so iconic for portraying. I transformed the original photo which was very crisp and defined to a more blurred version as I didn't want the background image to the main focus. I edited the original photo on Adobe Photoshop through using the blurred tool. I feel the colour on the background is still strong with it being blurred as certain colours have a flash of colour which makes it look very vibrant and strong. The main colours in the background image is sky blue and crisp white, both colours which are summery and neutral so they wouldn't take distraction from the main focus. The main focus being the drawing of the of the woman's face uses a strong pop of colour. Black and white is the most type of colour used which I feel made the illustration stand out as it was a contrast from the pastel colours of the background. I thought if I made the all of the face a bright or different colour it would merge more into the background and not stand out which is why I thought it would be more prominent if I stuck with an monochrome look. However I did use colour on the lips as I did want one part of the drawing to stand out from the rest and draw attention to the artwork. I decided a bright pink would be the best colour purely for the fact its such a strong and energetic colour. It also isn't similar to the background colour which makes it more defined. Its a colour which is popular within lipsticks, strangely I thought sticking to a colour which is seen in makeup will make the drawing more realistic. I didn't want to use a random colour which would make the drawing look unconvincing. I also used a monochrome theme within the typography as I liked how it merged within the main drawing. Using both white and black makes the typography look more slick and crisp.
Use of Imagery
The use of imagery in this piece of artwork is the drawing of the 'Sister of the Moon'. I found this image originally from Google which was a more drawing based illustration. I traced over the drawing using the light box and then scanned it onto the computer. I found the background image also from Google and done the similar transformation which I did to all of my graphic illustrations which was blurred the background. I like the use of blurring as it still makes the subject of the background visible but not the main focus. I changed the opacity of the drawing as the I wanted it to look as if it was 'disappearing' to relate to the lyrics 'sister of the moon' referring to the moon only being present at night. I liked how the layout of this artwork is very symmetrical, the background image of Fleetwood Mac is very in the middle which makes it look neat and defined, furthermore the image of the sister of the moon is in straight in the middle of the artwork. This gives an overall professional look to it. I really liked this illustration as I feel the imagery really relates to the song and the lyrics I used, I closely added details onto the original drawing to make it relate further, for example I made the moon look more defined by making it white and also the half moon on her forehead more significant by adding further detail and again making it white. With this piece of imagery I focused more on detail as I wanted it to look realistic and I found the use of adding details would achieve that.
Text was used throughout my graphic narrative. I decided I wanted the lyrics to my chosen song to be present on my artwork so people will understand how the imagery relates to my song. On this piece of artwork I decided to have the lyrics on the side of the page as I felt it looked crisp and slick being symmetrical to my drawing. The font I used was called 'riesling' and from popular font creating website 'DaFont'. I decided to use this font as I thought it had striking resemblances to Fleetwood Mac's popular typography. I added an extra layer of the font slightly underneath the original font as I felt it added another dimension and made it look more advanced and interesting. The second layer was slightly faded which I did through adjusting the opacity, I wanted to do this as I felt it related to the song being about the moon, which isn't always present and I wanted the font to look as if the second layer was disappearing. I really liked my chosen font as it simple but creative. The font is easy to read which was a bonus as I wanted people to be able to understand it and be able to read it from a distance. I changed the colours of the font to be a mixture of black and white. The majority of the text was in white font, which I used as I wanted the text to look stand out and defined. However I decided to adjust one word in the lyrics to be colored black. This word was 'spider' as obviously spiders are traditionally seen to be black but also I thought it added a more sinister and creepy twist. It also makes the word more bold and stand out which I was needed as the drawing I created was a spider and its the main part of the song lyrics 'and a black widow spider makes more sound than she'.
Hierarchy of Information
The hierarchy of information when regarding this piece of artwork is the the drawing of the woman's face. Straightaway you are drawn to the striking face as the features are very eye-catching, with bold eyes, defined eyebrows and noticeable lips, the drawing of the face is which catches attention. Lips being a bright pink does catch the eye as its one of the main colours in the artwork. The face looks slightly 3D which is why your attention is caught instantly. The second part of graphic narrative which catches the attention is the typography down the side of the page, with the use of a fancy font and the mixture monochrome makes the writing very noticeable. As well as the font having two layers to it makes it even more attention grabbing as you take a double look because it slightly seems like an illusion. The background image also draws you in as you may not notice its blurred straight away. This overall artwork is very attention grabbing as it's not simple due to multiple different things happening within it from the typography to the imagery.
Tools and Techniques Used
I used a variety of tools and techniques within this graphic narrative. I used Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator a lot when creating my artwork. When I scanned my drawings onto the computer I straightaway started transforming them on Illustrator I edited them through increasing opacity, contrast, brightness, cropping, adding extra layers, changing colours ect. I wanted to make sure my drawings were to the best standard I could before I started adding background, typography and editing them onto Photoshop. When I started editing my graphic narrative on Photoshop I transformed my background images by adjusting colours, cropping and adding a blurred look to them. With my font I downloaded from DaFont onto Photoshop and added to the background as well as changing certain colours, adding extra layers ect.
What is most successful about the image?
What is most successful about this image is the overall artwork. I was very pleased with the overall look of all three of my graphic narratives as they clearly demonstrate the song and the lyrics I choose. With this particular graphic narrative I found the illustration of the spider to be successful, I like the great detail of the spider and how I adjusted parts of the spider to be white as well as black. The spider has a 3D effect to it and looks as if its jumping out of the image. I did this through making the background image to be blurred and the spider to be crisped and defined. I also feel the typography on the image is successful as it adds a professional touch to the overall artwork, the use of adding an extra layer to the text makes it more interesting and stands out further from the image. Overall I'm really pleased with my finished graphic narrative, I feel I have learnt more skills and techniques which will help me with my graphics in the future. I feel I have achieved what I wanted to do with creating three equally successful graphic narratives that clearly relate to my chosen song and the band I choose. I found this Graphic assignment to be very interesting and fun to do, I enjoyed researching song lyrics, drawing illustrations and experimenting on Photoshop and Illustrator.
Final Graphic Narratives
'And Black Moons In Those Eyes Of Hers Made More Sense To Me'
'And A Black Widow Spider Makes More Sound Than She'
Finished Artwork
'And Black Moons In Those Eyes Of Hers Made More Sense To Me'
I changed this graphic narrative through enhancing the typography and colour. I added several more layers onto the original typography of 'and black moons in those eyes of hers made more sense to me' to make the final piece look more creative and exciting. I wanted to incorporate my artwork inspiration of 'I Love Dust' which where they use a 3D style effect, I did this by adding several extra layers onto the original typography to create a slightly 3D look. I liked this change to the artwork as I felt I made it look more advanced and visually better. I also added enhancements through adding a new layer onto the graphic narrative of 'black moons in those eyes' which I decided to do as they were the most significant part of those sections of lyrics. I placed them underneath the eye to relate to the moon in those eyes. I made the moons in the same colour of the lips to make them relate and also have a professional feel.
'And A Black Widow Spider Makes More Sound Than She'
The changes I made to this graphic narrative are similar to what I did on the first one. I wanted to make the overall look more polished and professional so I decided to make several adjustments to fulfil this. I added several layers onto the original text of 'and a black widow spider makes more sound than she' to create a slightly 3D look and to make the text stand out from the illustration. I liked the idea of creating several layers which were slightly faded as I thought it added a more creative twist. I also added the specific section of the chosen lyrics which were 'black widow spider' underneath the spider to create another element to the the illustration. I liked this because I felt it added a unique aspect to the illustrations with the use of a mixture of text and typography. I liked how on this piece of artwork I used the same colour scheme of monochrome which adds a slick and defined look.
'Sister of the Moon'
I made several changes to my final graphic narrative as I wanted it to look more professional. I done similar changes to my other two illustrations through adding extra layers onto original text to create a 3D effect. I also did this as I wanted some of the layers to look slightly faded as if it was disappearing from the illustration. I added an extra layer of 'moon sister' on the top of the artwork to relate to my the image of the woman. I want people to view this illustration and relate the 'moon sister' typography to the drawing of the woman. Some other slight adjustments I did was adding extra layers onto the original drawing on the woman to make it more crisp and stand out. I liked how this drawing looked slightly faded but I wanted some details of it to be more defined. Overall I'm pleased with the changed I made to my final pieces as I feel I have improved them further and created graphic narratives which I'm truly happy with.
